"I've sinned too much to have authority over demonic attacks."
How it sounds in your head: How can I command demons to leave when I just looked at porn last week? How can I take authority when I lost my temper with my wife yesterday? I feel like a hypocrite trying to exercise spiritual authority when my own life is such a mess. The enemy knows my failures.
"For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ."
-- Romans 5:17Source: religion teaching that spiritual authority flows from personal holiness rather than covenant position in Christ.
His recent failures are fresh in his mind—the compromise, the anger, the lust—and it feels dishonest to speak with authority when he feels so defeated personally. He imagines demons laughing at his hypocrisy.
Peter spoke with authority to heal a lame beggar just weeks after denying Jesus three times and running away in cowardice. His authority didn't come from his perfect track record but from the name of Jesus, and the man leaped instantly healed.
I REFUSE the lie that my failures disqualify my authority. IT IS WRITTEN that I have received the GIFT of righteousness and I reign in life through Jesus Christ (Romans 5:17). My authority is not based on my perfection but on His finished work. There is NO condemnation for me in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). IT IS WRITTEN that the blood of Jesus cleanses me from ALL sin (1 John 1:7)—not most sin, ALL sin. The BARAK blessing protected Abraham the LIAR, Jacob the DECEIVER, and Judah who slept with his daughter-in-law—because covenant trumps conduct. I am righteous by GIFT, not by effort. I stand in Christ's righteousness, not my own. Every demon must bow to the name of Jesus in my mouth regardless of yesterday's failure because I am the righteousness of God in Christ.
The Father didn't wait for Peter to have 40 days of perfect behavior after his denial before releasing healing power through him—He restored him instantly and sent him to heal others. Right now, the Father is running toward you with the robe of righteousness while you still smell like yesterday's pig pen, celebrating that your authority was never based on your track record.
