"I'm just a dry drunk—sober but miserable, so what's the point?"
How it sounds in your head: I haven't had a drink in years, but I'm angry, bitter, joyless. My family says I'm no fun anymore. I traded one misery for another. At least when I drank, I felt something. Now I'm just going through motions until I die. Sobriety without joy feels like a slow death.
"These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full."
-- John 15:11Source: religion that taught behavior modification without heart transformation, leaving people bound by rules without the LIFE of the Spirit.
When you stop a behavior through willpower without encountering the PERSON of Jesus and His abundant life, you end up with obedience but no joy—which feels like proof that freedom isn't real.
Bartimaeus was a blind beggar who encountered Jesus and cried out for mercy. Jesus healed him INSTANTLY, and the text says he 'followed Jesus on the road'—not just healed, but JOYFULLY following, whole, celebrating, transformed in identity from beggar to disciple in one moment.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm a joyless dry drunk. IT IS WRITTEN: The JOY of the Lord is my STRENGTH—not misery management, but FULL JOY. I am not called to behavior modification; I am called to ABIDE in the Vine, and JOY flows from Him AUTOMATICALLY. IT IS WRITTEN: In His presence is FULLNESS of joy, at His right hand are pleasures forevermore. I stop TRYING and start ABIDING. The BARAK blessing includes JOY—blessed coming and going, blessed in the field, blessed in ALL things. I receive the ABUNDANT LIFE Jesus came to give—LIFE, not existence. JOY NOW.
The Father isn't nodding approvingly at your grim sobriety—He's inviting you to the PARTY, the feast, the celebration where the prodigal gets the robe, ring, and fatted calf. He's running toward you not with a list of more things to stop but with FULLNESS of JOY because His presence IS joy, and you're invited in.
