"I'm an addict—that's who I am. Once an addict, always an addict."
How it sounds in your head: You relapsed again last night. This is just who you are now. Everyone at group says you'll always be 'in recovery'—you'll never just be free. The craving is your identity. Your bros know you as the guy who can't stop.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: AA/Recovery culture substituting Christ's finished work with perpetual labels and 12-step identity.
Every relapse feels like proof the label is permanent. Recovery culture reinforced it weekly: 'Hi, I'm [name], and I'm an addict'—even after years clean.
Five failed marriages, living with a man, sexual addiction—whole town knew her shame. One conversation with Jesus and she INSTANTLY became an evangelist who brought the city to Christ, no recovery program needed.
I REFUSE the lie that addiction is my identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW CREATION—the old addict DIED at the cross. My identity is not what I struggled with yesterday; my identity is CHRIST IN ME. I am not 'in recovery'—I am RECOVERED, REDEEMED, RESTORED. IT IS WRITTEN that old things have PASSED AWAY. The BARAK blessing that protected Abraham the liar protects me—not because I'm clean, but because I'm COVENANT. I am FREE, not fighting for freedom.
The Father doesn't see you as 'the addict trying to stay clean.' He sees you as His SON, already free, already new, already righteous. He's not monitoring your sobriety count—He's celebrating your IDENTITY in Christ from the moment you believed.
