"I'm an alcoholic. That's my identity. I'll always be in recovery, always one drink away from disaster."
How it sounds in your head: You've introduced yourself at meetings for decades: 'I'm Bob, and I'm an alcoholic.' It's stamped on your identity like a brand. Even years sober, you feel the label defines you more than anything else.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Enemy strategy to replace Christ-identity with addiction-identity, keeping you enslaved to a past Jesus already destroyed.
Recovery culture drills it in: say it every meeting, wear it as humility, never claim freedom. Your entire social circle reinforces it—to claim otherwise feels like denial or pride.
Manasseh sacrificed his own children to demons, filled Jerusalem with blood, led Israel into abominations worse than the pagans. God instantly forgave him when he humbled himself—restored him to the throne, counted him among the righteous kings.
I REFUSE the lie that addiction defines me. IT IS WRITTEN: I am a NEW creation in Christ—old things PASSED AWAY. I am not 'Bob the alcoholic in recovery'—I am Bob, SON OF THE MOST HIGH GOD, sealed by the Holy Spirit, righteous by the blood of Jesus. IT IS WRITTEN: the blessing of Abraham is mine—protected, provided for, prospering. The same covenant that protected liars and deceivers protects me NOW. I walk in INSTANT freedom because the Son has SET ME FREE, and whom the Son sets free is free INDEED.
The Father isn't waiting for you to complete your recovery steps—He's already thrown the party, put the robe on you, placed the ring of authority back on your hand. He sees you as His beloved son, not a project in progress.
