"I'm an addict - that's who I am. Recovery is my new identity."
How it sounds in your head: You introduce yourself at meetings as an addict. That label has become your entire identity. Even when you're clean, you define yourself by what you're recovering from, not who you actually are.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: Recovery culture turned identity marker into prison label, making the diagnosis permanent and the freedom temporary.
Every meeting starts with 'Hi, I'm [name] and I'm an addict.' You've said it hundreds of times - it's wired into your brain now. The recovery community says you'll always be one bad decision away from relapse, so you hold this identity like armor against yourself.
Saul was a serial murderer of Christians, dragging families from homes and watching Stephen's execution with approval. The moment he encountered Jesus, his identity INSTANTLY shifted - within three days he was preaching Christ, and nobody kept calling him 'Saul the murderer in recovery.'
I REFUSE the lie that addiction is my identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a new creation - old things have PASSED AWAY. My past does not define my present. My failures do not dictate my future. I am not 'an addict' - I am a SON, seated with Christ in heavenly places. IT IS WRITTEN that whom the Son sets free is free INDEED. The BARAK blessing of Abraham is mine through Christ - I am blessed coming in and going out, in the city and in the field. I walk in the freedom Christ DIED to give me, and I will not wear labels the cross already destroyed.
The Father doesn't see you as 'an addict trying hard.' He sees you as His beloved son, completely clean, wearing the robe and ring of sonship. While you were still covered in the shame of your addiction, He was RUNNING toward you with restoration.
