"I'll always be an addict - that's just who I am now."
How it sounds in your head: Every recovery group says I need to introduce myself as 'Hi, I'm Sarah, and I'm an addict.' Even when I'm clean, I'm still labeled by my worst moments. My identity is forever stamped with my past.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Source: World system through recovery culture that makes past sin permanent identity instead of celebrating new creation in Christ.
Every meeting reinforces the label, making sobriety about managing a permanent condition rather than receiving a new nature. The constant rehearsal of 'once an addict, always an addict' feels like humility but actually denies the finished work of the cross.
Saul was a murderer of Christians, consenting to Stephen's death and dragging believers to prison. Jesus knocked him off his horse, and within THREE DAYS he was called Paul the apostle - never 'Paul the recovering Pharisee' or 'Paul the former murderer in recovery.'
I REFUSE the lie that addiction is my identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW creation in Christ - old things PASSED AWAY. I am not a recovering addict; I am a REDEEMED daughter with a new nature. IT IS WRITTEN that whom the Son sets free is free INDEED. The BARAK blessing that protected Jacob the deceiver now rests on me - not because of my sobriety count but because of COVENANT. I am righteous, holy, and beloved - that's my name tag now.
The Father doesn't see you through the lens of your addiction - He sees you through the lens of Christ's blood. While you were still using, He was running toward you with the robe of righteousness, and the moment you turned, He placed it on you - not after 90 days clean, but INSTANTLY.
