"I'll always be an alcoholic. That's just who I am now, even decades sober."
How it sounds in your head: You've been in recovery so long, but you still introduce yourself that way. Every meeting, every sponsor conversation - you're defined by what you used to do. Even at 65, that label feels more real than any other identity you've tried to claim.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Enemy assignment to keep you bound to past instead of recognizing new creation identity in Christ.
Decades of 12-step language ingrained the idea that addiction is permanent identity, not past behavior. The recovery community reinforced 'always an addict' as humility, making you feel proud of wearing a label that contradicts your new creation reality.
Rahab was a professional prostitute in Jericho, defined by sexual sin for years. The moment she aligned with God's people, she was no longer called 'Rahab the prostitute' in her redemption - she became part of the Messianic line, grandmother to King David, listed in Jesus' genealogy without her past defining her.
I REFUSE the lie that addiction is my permanent identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a new creation - old things HAVE passed away, ALL things HAVE become new. I am not defined by what I used to do or struggle with. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, a daughter of the King, fully redeemed and completely new. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ - not 'less condemnation,' not 'condemnation when you slip' - ZERO condemnation. The BARAK blessing that protected Abraham even when he lied protects me now through the better covenant in Jesus' blood. I am FREE, not 'in recovery' - I am DELIVERED, RESTORED, and MADE NEW.
The Father doesn't see you through the lens of what you used to struggle with - He sees you through the blood of Jesus, completely righteous, completely new. He's not waiting for you to prove you've changed; He declared you changed the moment you came to Him, and He's running toward you with the robe of righteousness, celebrating who you ARE, not managing who you were.
