"I'm an addict - that's who I am forever, even after decades clean."
How it sounds in your head: I've lived ninety years and for so many of them, I was defined by my addiction. Even though I've been free for years, when I introduce myself at meetings, I still say 'I'm an addict.' That label feels more permanent than my own name. I'm afraid if I let go of that identity, I'll lose my sobriety.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Recovery culture wrongly made sobriety an endless fight instead of celebrating the finished work of the Cross that already broke every chain.
After decades of identifying as an addict in recovery rooms, the label feels safer than claiming complete freedom. At this age, she fears changing her identity might somehow undo all the years of hard-won sobriety.
She had five failed marriages and was living with a man, known throughout town for her sexual addiction and broken relationships. Jesus gave her one conversation, and she instantly became the first evangelist to her entire city - no recovery program, no steps, just immediate transformation and NEW identity.
I REFUSE the lie that 'addict' is my permanent name! IT IS WRITTEN that I am a new creation in Christ - old things PASSED AWAY! I am not an addict in recovery; I am a DAUGHTER in resurrection! My identity is BELOVED, RIGHTEOUS, FREE - these are not goals, they are my PRESENT REALITY! IT IS WRITTEN that whom the Son sets free is free INDEED, and Jesus doesn't do partial freedom! The BARAK blessing of Abraham is mine through Christ - the same blessing that protected and prospered even when Abraham lied, Isaac deceived, and Jacob schemed still covers me! I stand in COMPLETE freedom as a testament to God's finished work!
Sweet daughter, the Father doesn't see you through the lens of what you once struggled with - He sees you through the lens of His Son's finished work. He's running toward you with a robe that says RIGHTEOUS, a ring that says AUTHORITY, and sandals that say DAUGHTER, not with a name tag that says 'addict in recovery.'
