"I'll start caring for my body when I finally love it, but I can't love it like this."
How it sounds in your head: You've heard you're supposed to 'love your body,' but the gap between where you are and where you think you should be feels insurmountable. You tell yourself that once you lose the weight, tone up, fix the flaws, THEN you'll treat yourself well. But in the meantime, your body feels like the enemy, and caring for something you hate feels impossible. So you wait for love to arrive before you act, and care never comes.
"We love Him because He first loved us."
-- 1 John 4:19Source: The belief that love is a feeling that must precede action, rather than a choice and a commitment that creates the feeling.
Because you don't feel love for your body—you feel disappointment, frustration, sometimes disgust—and acting lovingly toward something you resent feels fake. Because you've been taught that authenticity means only acting on what you feel, so caring without loving feels like lying.
The Samaritan didn't wait to FEEL love for the wounded stranger before he acted. He saw, had compassion, and IMMEDIATELY bandaged wounds, poured on oil and wine, put him on his own animal, took him to an inn. Love was the ACTION, not the prerequisite emotion. Care came first; the wounded man was healed.
I REFUSE the lie that I must feel love for my body before I care for it. IT IS WRITTEN that we love because He first loved us—love is a response to HIS love, not a feeling I manufacture. God loved my body enough to make it His temple, to dwell in it, to call it GOOD. I can steward what He loves even while I'm learning to see it through His eyes. Care is not contingent on feeling; care is a CHOICE. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 12:1 to present my body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable—He's already called it ACCEPTABLE. I honor His temple with rest, nourishment, kindness, movement that feels good—not because I've arrived at perfect self-love, but because HIS love is already perfect.
The Father didn't wait for you to clean up, shape up, or feel love for yourself before He loved you. He loved you at your worst, ran toward you in the pig pen, and His love TRANSFORMS—not because you deserved it, but because that's who He is. Receive His love for your body, and let care flow from THAT.
