"I need to work a program for the rest of my life or I'll lose everything again."
How it sounds in your head: Meetings forever, sponsors forever, steps forever - that's what keeps me safe. If I stop the program, I'll fall apart. I'm too old to rebuild again if I relapse. The program is my life support system.
"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."
-- John 15:5Well-meaning recovery system that becomes substitute savior instead of pointing to Jesus as ONLY sustainer.
The program DID help her get sober. The structure felt safe. After decades of relying on it, imagining life without it feels terrifying, like removing a safety net.
Forty years in the wilderness, God provided manna EVERY SINGLE MORNING without them having a program to work or steps to complete. They just had to trust and receive. The day they entered the Promised Land, manna stopped because they didn't need it anymore - instant transition from daily provision to abundance.
I REFUSE the lie that a program is my savior or sustainer. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus is the vine and I am the branch - I bear fruit by ABIDING in Him, not by working steps. My sobriety is not maintained by human effort - it's maintained by divine CONNECTION. IT IS WRITTEN that He who began this good work in me will COMPLETE it. I am not white-knuckling through recovery forever - I am RESTING in His finished work. Jesus is my life support, my sustainer, my strength. I am free to receive help without making it my god. Christ alone is my sufficiency.
The Father isn't asking you to depend on a program for life - He's inviting you to depend on HIM. Programs can be tools, but Jesus is the builder. You're not in 'recovery mode' forever - you're in ABUNDANT LIFE mode, sustained by His grace that never runs dry.
