"I'm powerless over this addiction—I'll never be strong enough to beat it."
How it sounds in your head: Step 1 says you're powerless, and they're right. You've tried to quit a hundred times. Your willpower sucks. Other guys can quit cold turkey—you can't even make it through a weekend. You're just weak.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
-- Philippians 4:13Source: Recovery culture's 'powerless' doctrine bypassing the POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT living in you.
Every failed attempt at quitting feels like proof you don't have what it takes. The 'powerless' label feels humble and honest, not like denial.
Lost his supernatural strength through compromise and sin, eyes gouged out, enslaved grinding grain. One prayer and God INSTANTLY restored his strength—he killed more enemies in his death than in his entire life, blind and broken.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm powerless over this addiction. IT IS WRITTEN that I can do ALL THINGS through Christ who strengthens me. I am not fighting in my own strength—the SAME POWER that raised Jesus from the dead LIVES IN ME. God has not given me a spirit of powerlessness, but of POWER, love, and a SOUND MIND. IT IS WRITTEN in 1 John 4:4 that greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. I am not weak—I am INDWELT by omnipotence. The BARAK blessing makes me the HEAD and not the TAIL, ABOVE and not beneath.
The Father doesn't see you grinding grain in defeat. He sees you ALREADY STRONG in the Spirit He placed in you. He's not waiting for you to develop willpower—He already gave you HIS POWER, freely, the moment you believed.
