"I hurt someone really bad and God can't forgive me until I make it right."
How it sounds in your head: I said something cruel or did something that really hurt someone. I feel like God won't forgive me until I somehow fix what I broke and make that person forgive me first.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Source: Religious works-based teaching making God's forgiveness contingent on human restitution instead of the finished work of the cross.
The guilt of hurting someone weighs heavy and you can't imagine God dismissing it. Making it right feels like the only way to earn back His approval and your own peace.
Zacchaeus was a tax collector who had stolen from countless people through extortion. Jesus invited Himself to dinner BEFORE Zacchaeus paid anyone back. The restitution came FROM being accepted, not TO BE accepted. 'Today salvation has come to this house.'
I REFUSE the lie that God's forgiveness waits for me to fix what I broke. IT IS WRITTEN that He has forgiven me ALL trespasses and nailed the requirement list to the cross. Jesus died for me while I was still His enemy - He doesn't wait for me to make things right. IT IS WRITTEN that if I confess my sins He is faithful to forgive, period. The BARAK blessing covered Jacob even after his sons murdered an entire city. I receive His forgiveness NOW. I let His love empower me to make things right FROM acceptance, not FOR acceptance. I am forgiven. I am loved. I am free.
The Father has already forgiven you and is inviting Himself to dinner in your mess right now - not after you clean up, but in the middle of it. His acceptance comes first, and your attempts to make things right flow FROM His love, not to earn it.
