"I care too much and should learn to be more detached"
How it sounds in your head: Everyone tells me I'm 'too invested' in people and causes. I lose sleep over friends' problems while they seem fine. My therapist keeps using the word 'codependent.' Maybe if I could just care less, I wouldn't hurt so much.
"Is Ephraim My dear son? Is he a pleasant child? For though I spoke against him, I earnestly remember him still; therefore My heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says the LORD."
-- Jeremiah 31:20Western individualism masquerading as health, teaching detachment instead of biblical community and bearing burdens together
She's been burned by caring deeply while others moved on easily, and every self-help book tells her that healthy people have boundaries that look a lot like not caring. Her compassion is exhausting her.
Jonathan's soul was knit to David's - he loved him as his own soul and gave him his robe, armor, sword, bow, and belt immediately. This deep, invested love is celebrated in Scripture as covenant friendship, not codependency.
I REFUSE the lie that my deep care is dysfunction. IT IS WRITTEN that God's heart YEARNS for His people and He cannot stop thinking about them. Jesus was moved with compassion in His gut. IT IS WRITTEN that I am to bear one another's burdens, to weep with those who weep, to love deeply from a pure heart. My capacity to care reflects the heart of a God who is not detached but deeply invested. Jonathan's covenant love is celebrated, not pathologized. I am made for deep connection because I'm made in the image of a God who cannot be casual about His children.
The Father is not teaching you to care less - He's teaching you to receive FROM Him so your care flows from fullness, not emptiness. He's the God who couldn't stay detached so He sent His Son, and your compassion is a direct reflection of His nature.
