"God must be punishing me for my past sins with this suffering."
How it sounds in your head: You know what you did when you were younger. The abortion. The affair. The years away from church. This pain is payback. God is settling accounts before you die.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Religious karma teaching that God operates on retribution system rather than covenant grace through Christ's blood.
The pain is real, the memories of past sins are vivid, and preachers have said 'you reap what you sow' for decades. It feels like divine bookkeeping coming due.
Manasseh sacrificed his own children to demons, filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, did more evil than the pagan nations. When he finally repented, God IMMEDIATELY heard him, brought him back to Jerusalem, and restored him. No punishment period, no penance, no making up for it—instant forgiveness and restoration.
I REFUSE the lie that God is punishing me for my past. IT IS WRITTEN that He has forgiven ALL my trespasses and nailed the list of charges to the cross. There is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—not reduced condemnation, NONE. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 103:12 that as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed my transgressions from me. Manasseh sacrificed his children and God still restored him instantly upon repentance. The BARAK blessing covered Jacob even after he deceived his father. I stand in a BETTER covenant through Jesus' blood. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, fully forgiven, fully loved, fully free.
The Father isn't keeping a punishment ledger. He's looking at you through the lens of Jesus' finished work, seeing you completely forgiven, debts canceled, charges dropped—running toward you like the prodigal's father, not to punish but to celebrate that you're His daughter, covered by the blood that speaks better than Abel's.
