"God is punishing me or my family through this disability."
How it sounds in your head: You've heard people ask, 'What did you do to deserve this?' or 'Is this because of your parents' sin?' Maybe God is angry. Maybe this is payback for something. Maybe if you were better, holier, more faithful, this wouldn't be happening.
"Jesus answered, 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.'"
-- John 9:3Religious teaching that connects suffering with divine punishment and Old Covenant theology applied to New Covenant people.
Well-meaning Christians have asked hurtful questions. She's read Job's friends' logic—suffering must mean sin. Preachers have implied God withdraws blessing when people fail. The guilt and shame are paralyzing.
The thief was GUILTY—criminal, dying for his crimes, no time to clean up his life or prove himself. He simply said, 'Lord, remember me.' Jesus responded INSTANTLY: 'Today you will be with Me in Paradise.' No punishment, no process—immediate acceptance, immediate promise. Grace for the guilty.
I REFUSE the lie that my disability is punishment or that God is angry at me! IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus specifically said disability is NOT the result of sin but the opportunity for God's works to be revealed. Christ took ALL punishment on the cross—there is NO condemnation for me because I am in Him. IT IS WRITTEN that God did not send His Son to condemn but to SAVE, and I am saved, loved, fully accepted by the Father. My disability is not curse—I am REDEEMED from the curse. The Abrahamic blessing protects me even when I fail, just as it protected Abraham the liar, Jacob the deceiver, Judah the adulterer. I declare the Father's delight over me, His pleasure in me, His goodness toward me—not because I'm perfect but because He is GOOD and I am His beloved daughter.
Your Father is running toward you right now, not holding your disability against you or counting sins. He's not waiting for you to figure out what you did wrong—He's embracing you, calling you beloved, whispering that this is NOT punishment, that He is FOR you, that His mercy triumphs over all judgment, that you are HIS.
