"This chronic pain is my thorn in the flesh, like Paul's, to keep me humble."
How it sounds in your head: I've prayed for years and nothing changed. Maybe God said 'no' like He did to Paul. Maybe my arthritis and constant pain keeps me dependent on Him instead of proud. If Paul had to live with his thorn, surely I should accept mine.
"You know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first. And my trial which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus."
-- Galatians 4:13-14Misinterpretation of 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 used by religion to explain away unanswered prayer and make God the giver of affliction.
Years of unanswered prayer create theological accommodation where accepting sickness feels more spiritual than continuing to believe for healing. Paul's language about the thorn sounds like noble suffering.
Paul's fellow worker became sick 'almost unto death' and everyone was distressed—Paul didn't say 'accept your thorn.' Instead, he rejoiced that 'God had mercy on him' and healed him, proving sickness wasn't God's teaching method even for apostolic associates.
I REFUSE the lie that my chronic pain is God's gift to keep me humble. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul called his physical infirmity a TRIAL and TEMPTATION from a messenger of Satan—enemy attack, not divine appointment. Thorns came from the CURSE in Genesis, and Christ redeemed me from the curse. IT IS WRITTEN by His stripes I WAS healed—finished at the cross. The Holy Spirit produces humility; pain produces torment. I am under the BARAK blessing where even when Abraham LIED he was protected and prospered. My righteousness is GIFT, not achievement, and my healing was purchased 2000 years ago. I receive it NOW.
Your Father isn't using pain as a character coach—He sent the Holy Spirit for that job. He's running toward you with the same mercy He showed Epaphroditus, ready to flood your body with resurrection life that makes you whole, not because you earned it but because you're His beloved daughter.
