"The gift of healing was only for establishing the early church. We have the Bible now instead."
How it sounds in your head: You're an educated man—you trust the completed canon of Scripture. Miracles were 'sign gifts' to authenticate the apostles before the New Testament was written. Now we have the full revelation. Expecting healing gifts today is charismatic excess.
"Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up."
-- James 5:14-15Source: Cessationist doctrine born from Reformed theology's attempt to systematize God and explain why churches lacked power.
The argument is clean, systematic, scholarly. Hebrews says the apostles were confirmed by signs. Once Scripture was complete, signs weren't needed. It feels intellectually honest, protecting you from emotionalism and deception.
Lame from birth, over forty years old, never walked a day in his life. Peter said, 'Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.' Immediately his feet and ankles received strength—he walked, leaped, praised God.
I REFUSE the lie that healing gifts expired with the apostles or the completion of Scripture. IT IS WRITTEN: 'Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders'—present tense command, ongoing instruction, no sunset clause. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from death lives in me NOW. IT IS WRITTEN: these signs will FOLLOW those who believe—not 'followed' past tense. I am a believer, Abraham's seed, heir to the BARAK blessing that includes divine health. I lay hands on the sick, I pray the prayer of faith, and I expect the Lord to raise them up.
The Father didn't trade healing for a book—He gave both. Scripture reveals His will; the Spirit accomplishes His will. He's not less active because you have a Bible; He's more accessible because you know His promises and can pray them with confidence.
