"Taking painkillers shows I'm not willing to bear my cross and suffer like Jesus."
How it sounds in your head: Jesus suffered on the cross without pain relief - shouldn't I be willing to endure pain too? Maybe refusing painkillers is part of dying to self. Comfort might be keeping me from deeper spirituality.
"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases."
-- Psalm 103:2-3Religion romanticizes suffering as spiritual virtue, confusing Christ's redemptive suffering with unnecessary pain.
You've heard sermons about taking up your cross and denying yourself, and pain feels like an opportunity to prove devotion. Seeking relief feels soft and self-indulgent compared to radical suffering.
Before crucifixion, they offered Jesus wine mixed with myrrh - a pain-dulling drink. He refused it because He needed to be fully conscious to be our substitute. You are NOT the substitute - He was. You don't reenact His redemptive suffering.
I REFUSE the lie that pain proves devotion. IT IS WRITTEN that healing is a benefit God wants me to receive and remember. Jesus suffered redemptively to PURCHASE my freedom - I don't earn points by reenacting His unique sacrifice. IT IS WRITTEN: By His stripes I am healed. His pain BOUGHT my relief. Taking painkillers receives what He already provided. I am the blessed of Abraham, and the blessing includes freedom from unnecessary suffering. I honor His sacrifice by RECEIVING what He purchased, not by refusing relief.
Your Father is running toward you saying 'My Son suffered so YOU don't have to!' He's not impressed by your pain - He's heartbroken that you think refusing relief honors Him. He wants you FREE, not suffering unnecessarily.
