"Taking psychiatric medication changes who God made me to be instead of letting Him work naturally."
How it sounds in your head: What if these meds are altering my personality? What if I'm medicating away the parts of me that God wants to refine? What if I'm supposed to feel these things deeply and I'm just numbing what God wants to use?
"Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them."
-- Psalm 139:16Romanticization of suffering combined with fear that medical intervention violates God's design for personality.
She's been told that God uses pain to shape character, so alleviating it feels like interfering with His work. Her artistic, sensitive nature feels spiritual, and medication feels like it might erase that.
She spent everything on physicians for twelve years trying to get well. Jesus didn't rebuke her for seeking medical treatment - He healed her and called her 'daughter,' affirming both her medical pursuit AND His supernatural touch.
I REFUSE the lie that medication erases God's design for me. IT IS WRITTEN that God saw and wrote all my days, including days with medical treatment. My brain chemistry is part of my physical body, and stewarding it with medicine is no different than treating any other organ. The woman with the issue of blood pursued doctors for twelve years, and Jesus called her 'daughter' with no condemnation. IT IS WRITTEN that I am fearfully and wonderfully made - and that includes being made with a brain that sometimes needs support. My medication doesn't change who I am; it helps me BECOME who I am without dysfunction clouding it.
Your Father is running toward you saying 'I made you with a physical brain that I want functioning optimally so the REAL you can shine.' He's not worried that medicine will erase you - He's celebrating that it helps you be fully present.
