"Real men of God like David and Paul never needed antidepressants, so I shouldn't either."
How it sounds in your head: Bible heroes overcame everything through faith and prayer alone. Taking pills for my depression makes me weak compared to them. Maybe I'm supposed to just 'man up' and trust God more instead of relying on medication.
"I returned and saw under the sun that—The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all."
-- Ecclesiastes 9:11Toxic masculinity merged with religiosity, creating false comparison to ancient figures who lived before modern medicine existed.
Biblical heroes seem invincible in Sunday School stories, and his medication feels like proof he can't measure up. Cultural messaging that real men don't need help amplifies the shame.
David wrote, 'Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why disquieted within me?' - describing clinical depression symptoms throughout multiple Psalms. He didn't have antidepressants, but he WOULD have used them if available, just as he used armor, weapons, and physicians.
I REFUSE the lie that medication makes me less of a man or less faithful than David! IT IS WRITTEN that time and chance happen to ALL - including brain chemistry challenges. David described depression in his Psalms; he just didn't have the medical tools I do. My antidepressants are God's PROVISION, not a failure! IT IS WRITTEN there is NO condemnation in Christ. The BARAK blessing doesn't require perfect neurotransmitters. I am a SON, fully loved, whether my serotonin is balanced by prayer or by pills or BOTH. My Father runs toward me with EVERY good gift!
Your Father doesn't compare you to David any more than He compares David to you. David would have REJOICED at the medical advances you have access to - God's provision evolves through generations, and you're not less blessed for receiving what He provides NOW.
