"Real Christians should reject wealth and live simply to be like Jesus."
How it sounds in your head: Jesus didn't own a house. He told the rich young ruler to sell everything. The disciples left their nets. Maybe pursuing wealth means I'm not really following Him. True discipleship looks like simplicity and sacrifice, not success.
"Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance."
-- Luke 8:3Source: Religion cherry-picked verses about selling possessions while ignoring Jesus wore expensive robes, had a treasurer, and was supported by wealthy women.
The Sermon on the Mount sounds anti-wealth, and every discipleship message emphasizes sacrifice. Prosperity feels like compromise compared to the radical calls to forsake all.
Lydia was a seller of purple (expensive fabric), meaning she was wealthy. After Paul led her to Christ, she didn't sell her business—she used her HOME to host the church and her WEALTH to support ministry.
I REFUSE the lie that following Jesus requires rejecting wealth. IT IS WRITTEN in Luke 8:3 that wealthy women provided for Jesus from their substance. He received blessing without guilt. IT IS WRITTEN in Matthew 6:33 to seek FIRST His Kingdom, and all these things will be ADDED. I don't choose poverty to prove devotion—I receive abundance to fund Kingdom work. The BARAK over my life includes blessing in my storehouses and everything I set my hand to. I am Abraham's seed, heir to covenant promises that include prosperity. I follow Jesus AND prosper, just like Lydia, Barnabas, and Joseph of Arimathea. Wealth with worship is the design, not the disqualification.
Your Father isn't asking you to live broke to follow Jesus—He's inviting you to live blessed WHILE following Jesus. The same Jesus who was supported by wealthy women and buried in a rich man's tomb isn't threatened by your prosperity. He's the one giving it. Follow Him in fullness, not lack.
