"Pain is punishment for something I did wrong. I probably deserve this."
How it sounds in your head: What did you do to deserve this? Maybe it's that season of rebellion in your twenties. Maybe you didn't take care of your body. Maybe God is paying you back for past sins. Good people don't suffer like this—there must be something you did.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Religious karma theology: reaping-and-sowing twisted into divine punishment, negating the cross that already bore all punishment.
Religious teaching about consequences and 'you reap what you sow' creates causation-seeking in suffering. Guilt over past failures provides easy explanation for current pain.
Squandered his entire inheritance on prostitutes and wild living, hit absolute rock bottom feeding pigs, deserved nothing but judgment by religious standards. Father RAN to him while he still smelled like pigs, didn't make him earn forgiveness or work off debt—IMMEDIATELY gave him robe, ring, sandals, and threw a party; from pig pen to celebration in minutes.
I REFUSE the lie that pain is punishment for my past. IT IS WRITTEN that He has forgiven me ALL trespasses and nailed the record of debt to the cross—there is NO punishment left because Jesus took it ALL. I am not under law but under GRACE. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:1 that there is NO CONDEMNATION for those in Christ Jesus—not 'less condemnation' but NONE. The BARAK blessing of Abraham covered him even when he LIED to kings twice—God still protected and prospered him because covenant isn't based on behavior. How much more does Christ's blood cover me in the BETTER covenant? I am not paying for yesterday's sins; I'm walking in today's righteousness as a GIFT. Jesus took the curse so I could have the blessing.
The Father isn't keeping a scorecard of your failures, waiting to balance the books. He already balanced them at Calvary—your slate is wiped clean, and He's running toward you with the robe of righteousness, not a bill for past-due punishment.
