"Nice things are vanity; real men of God live humbly and don't need material comforts."
How it sounds in your head: You look at missionaries in huts and pastors driving beaters and think that's what real devotion looks like. Wanting the nicer car, the better house, the comfortable retirement - that's worldly, carnal, immature faith. Spiritual giants don't care about thread count or leather seats. You should be content with basic.
"The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, says the LORD of hosts."
-- Haggai 2:8Religion's false humility equates poverty with holiness, making God's material blessings seem carnal instead of covenant inheritance.
Every sermon on sacrifice, every missionary story of going without, every verse about storing treasures in heaven - they all seem to say stuff doesn't matter. Men of your generation were taught real strength means going without complaining. Wanting comfort feels weak, and wanting nice things feels shallow when you're supposed to be focused on eternal things.
God offered Solomon anything, and Solomon asked for wisdom instead of wealth. God's response wasn't 'good choice, stay humble and poor' - it was 'BECAUSE you asked for wisdom, I'll give you wisdom AND riches and wealth and honor such as none of the kings have had before you.' God added extravagant material blessing to spiritual desire without apology.
I REFUSE the lie that nice things equal vanity and real spirituality requires material poverty. IT IS WRITTEN that the silver and gold are the LORD's - He owns it all and freely gives to His children. I will not equate false humility with true holiness or accept religious poverty as spirituality. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed with the blessing of Abraham, who was VERY RICH in livestock, silver, and gold, whom God called His friend. Material comfort isn't carnality - it's covenant. I receive the abundance my Father provides without apology, knowing He delights in the prosperity of His servants and runs toward me with the robe, ring, and every good gift.
Your Father didn't dress the prodigal in burlap to teach him humility - He put the BEST robe on him while he still smelled like pigs. God isn't more pleased with you in poverty than in provision. He's the Father who gives GOOD gifts, who prepares rooms in a mansion, who describes heaven with streets of GOLD - He's not embarrassed by material blessing.
