"My mental health struggles are God's way of humbling me or teaching me dependence."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe you were too self-sufficient before. Maybe God allowed this depression or anxiety to break your pride and make you rely on Him. Maybe this is His tool to shape your character.
"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."
-- John 10:10Theological error making God the author of affliction instead of the enemy, from bad teaching on redemptive suffering.
You've heard testimonies of people saying their suffering was God's teaching tool. Religious culture has taught you to find God's purpose in every pain, making you reluctant to resist what might be His will.
Woman had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years. Jesus called it SATAN'S BONDAGE—'ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound... be loosed?' Jesus identified the source as Satan, not God's character-building plan.
I REFUSE the lie that God authored my mental illness to humble me. IT IS WRITTEN the thief comes to steal, kill, destroy—but Jesus came to give ABUNDANT LIFE. Jesus called the bent woman's affliction SATAN'S BONDAGE, not God's teaching tool. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and Christ redeemed me from the curse. Depression and anxiety are under the curse of Deuteronomy 28—confusion, trembling heart, anguish. IT IS WRITTEN Christ became a curse so I could receive the BLESSING. I resist this affliction as enemy work, not Father's curriculum.
Father is running toward you with the robe of abundant life, not the chains of depression disguised as discipline. He's not the author of your mental torment—He's the Healer running toward you to break every chain.
