"My chronic illness is who I am now. I'm not [name] anymore, I'm 'the sick guy.'"
How it sounds in your head: Your friends see you as the guy who can't keep up anymore. You used to be strong, capable, the one they counted on. Now you're the one who has to sit out, explain your limitations, cancel plans. The disease has taken your identity as a man.
"But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.'"
-- Isaiah 43:1Enemy assignment to replace covenant identity with diagnosis identity, reinforced by medical labels and insurance forms that define you by disease codes.
Every doctor visit, every form, every limitation screams this name at you. Your body is physically changing in ways that make you feel like a different person than who you were at 22. The energetic, capable version of yourself feels like a stranger now.
Crippled in both feet since age 5, saw himself as a 'dead dog,' defined by his disability. David INSTANTLY restored him to royalty, gave him Saul's entire estate, and he ate at the king's table DAILY like a son—disability unchanged but identity TRANSFORMED in one conversation.
I REFUSE the lie that any diagnosis defines me. IT IS WRITTEN: I am called by MY NAME, and I am HIS. My identity was settled in eternity before one cell malfunctioned. The enemy assigned this label; my Father assigned my NAME. I am a son of the Most High God, blessed with the BARAK blessing of Abraham, covenant heir, and seated with Christ—the illness is temporary, my identity is ETERNAL. IT IS WRITTEN: No weapon formed against me shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against me in judgment I shall condemn, including the tongue that calls me by disease names. I answer only to the name my Father calls me.
The Father isn't waiting for you to 'accept your new normal.' He's running toward you with the robe of sonship OVER whatever the illness has done to your body, announcing 'THIS is my beloved son' while medical charts say something else entirely. You're not sick-guy-who-used-to-be-strong; you're HIS, and that identity cannot be touched by any diagnosis.
