"I've read too much theology; now I can't just believe simply anymore."
How it sounds in your head: You know about the councils, the canon debates, the historical context. You can't un-see the complexity. Simple faith feels naive now, and you miss when you could just believe without all this weight. Ignorance was bliss.
"At that time Jesus answered and said, 'I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.'"
-- Matthew 11:25Enemy weaponizing knowledge against intimacy; religion equating simplicity with ignorance.
You've studied church history, systematic theology, hermeneutics, and now every sermon feels shallow. The complexity has stolen the joy, and you don't know how to get back to when faith felt light.
Apollos was 'eloquent and mighty in the Scriptures,' teaching accurately about Jesus, but he only knew John's baptism. Priscilla and Aquila took him aside and explained 'the way of God more accurately,' and he became even MORE effective—knowledge didn't ruin him; it deepened him when combined with humility.
I REFUSE the lie that knowledge ruins faith. IT IS WRITTEN that revelation comes to babes, and the invitation is to childlike trust, not intellectual regression. Apollos was mighty in Scriptures AND humble enough to learn more, and the combination made him powerful. Knowledge puffs up, but LOVE builds up, and I declare my theology is serving my intimacy, not replacing it. IT IS WRITTEN in Jeremiah 9:24, 'Let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and KNOWS Me'—the goal is KNOWING, not just learning. I declare: I am coming back to simple trust without abandoning what I've learned, because the Father doesn't fear my questions or my books. The BARAK blessing makes me wise AND childlike.
The Father isn't frustrated that you've studied deeply—He's inviting you to bring all that knowledge into the encounter and let Him show you that KNOWING Him is simpler and deeper than any system. The theology is the map; He's the territory, and you can have both.
