"I'm powerless over my addiction - I always will be."
How it sounds in your head: Step One taught me to say 'I am powerless' every time I share. I've said it thousands of times over the decades. Now I'm ninety, and even though I haven't struggled in years, I still begin every share with 'I'm powerless.' They say admitting powerlessness is the foundation of recovery, so I'm terrified to claim any power, even the power of Christ in me.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
-- Philippians 4:13Recovery teaching stole the truth that Christ's power in us makes us MORE than conquerors and replaced it with permanent victim language.
The entire recovery framework is built on declaring powerlessness as the first step. After decades of this practice, claiming power through Christ feels like dangerous pride that might lead to a fall.
After losing his strength, getting his eyes gouged out, and being enslaved grinding grain in prison as a mockery of his former power, Samson cried out one more time. God INSTANTLY restored his strength, and he killed more enemies in his death than in his entire life - complete power restoration in ONE MOMENT despite total failure.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm powerless! IT IS WRITTEN that I can do ALL THINGS through Christ who strengthens me! I am not a powerless victim managing addiction - I am a POWERFUL daughter walking in resurrection strength! The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead LIVES IN ME and gives me POWER! IT IS WRITTEN that God has NOT given me a spirit of powerlessness but of POWER, love, and a sound mind! I am MORE than a conqueror through Him who loved me! The BARAK blessing that flowed to Abraham's seed flows through me, and that blessing includes POWER over every enemy, including addiction! I stand in the STRENGTH of the Lord and the POWER of His might!
Beautiful daughter, the Father isn't asking you to declare powerlessness - He's asking you to declare HIS power working in you. He put His resurrection power INSIDE you, not so you could manage weakness, but so you could WALK in strength that isn't yours but is fully available to you.
