"I'm an addict forever. That's just who I am now."
How it sounds in your head: Every time I introduce myself in a meeting, I say 'I'm an addict.' It's been years, but they say this is my identity for life. One drink, one hit, one slip and I'm right back to square one. I'll always be broken.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

He's been to meetings where everyone identifies by their addiction, creating a tribe around brokenness. The '12 steps' feel safer than trusting instant transformation because gradual change seems more believable than miraculous rebirth.
Manasseh sacrificed his own children to demons, filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and led an entire nation into witchcraft. When he cried out to God from prison, God heard him, brought him back to Jerusalem, and restored him—INSTANT forgiveness for the worst king in Israel's history.
I REFUSE the lie that addiction is my permanent identity. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW creation—the old has PASSED AWAY. I am not 'in recovery,' I am RECOVERED by the blood of Jesus. IT IS WRITTEN that whom the Son sets free is free INDEED. I don't carry yesterday's labels into today's freedom. The BARAK blessing flows through me—the same covenant that protected liars and deceivers now protects and empowers me. I am a SON, not a statistic.
The Father doesn't see you through the lens of what you used to put in your body—He sees you through the lens of what His Son BECAME for you. You're not a former addict on probation; you're a son wearing the ring of authority, and He's throwing a party while you still smell like the pigpen.
