"If the church was really God's people, they wouldn't have treated me this way."

How it sounds in your head: I thought Christians were supposed to be different—more loving, more forgiving, more safe. Instead they were cliquish, gossipy, and cold. If God's people act like this, maybe He's not even real.

Galatians 2:11-14

"Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all..."

-- Galatians 2:11-14
Enemy whispers: If they were really God's people, they'd act like it—so maybe God isn't real. BUT IT IS WRITTEN: Galatians 2:11-14 - PETER himself, the rock, the apostle, acted like a hypocrite out of fear, and Paul called him out publicly. Even the BEST believers sometimes operate in flesh instead of Spirit. Their failure doesn't negate God's reality—it proves we ALL need grace. IT IS WRITTEN in 1 John 4:20 that anyone who says they love God but hates their brother is a liar. God agrees with you about their behavior.
Quick Truth: LIE: God's people should act better. TRUTH: Even apostles failed, but God's faithfulness doesn't depend on human performance. Galatians 2:11-14

Source: Expectations that humans in church would be perfect, not accounting for the reality that believers are still human and some operate in flesh, not Spirit.

Why this feels true:

You experienced genuine meanness, exclusion, or coldness from people who sang worship songs an hour earlier. The cognitive dissonance is real and the disappointment valid.

Genesis 37:23-28
Joseph and his brothers

Joseph's own BROTHERS, the children of the covenant, stripped him, threw him in a pit, sold him into slavery, and faked his death to their father. Years later, God made Joseph second in command of Egypt and used him to save the very brothers who betrayed him—God's plan prevailed despite their evil.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that God isn't real because His people acted badly. IT IS WRITTEN that even the apostle Peter operated in hypocrisy and fear, and Paul had to correct him publicly—human failure doesn't negate God's faithfulness. The people who wounded me were operating in FLESH, not SPIRIT. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NOW no condemnation for me in Christ Jesus. I am not defined by how humans treated me but by how my FATHER sees me. I carry the BARAK blessing of Abraham—I am blessed in the city and in the field. God is using even this betrayal to reveal His faithfulness and lead me into LIFE.

But God actually:

The Father is running toward you saying, 'They got it wrong about you, but I NEVER have.' He's whispering that their failure to love you well doesn't change that He's been loving you perfectly every single second, even through the pain they caused.
