"If I were more grateful, I wouldn't be depressed"
How it sounds in your head: I know I'm blessed—I have a home, food, friends. Other people have it so much worse. The fact that I'm still depressed means I'm ungrateful and selfish. I should be able to praise my way out of this.
"Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
-- Nehemiah 8:10Teaching that equates depression with ingratitude, making brain chemistry a character flaw.
She's seen gratitude posts cure someone's bad day and heard testimonies of praise breaking depression. Her continued struggle feels like she's not grateful enough for what she has.
Hannah was 'in bitterness of soul' and wept in anguish, unable to eat, deeply depressed despite a husband who loved her. God didn't rebuke her sorrow—He heard her prayer and answered her.
I REFUSE the lie that depression equals ingratitude. IT IS WRITTEN that the joy of the LORD is my strength, not my manufactured positivity. Gratitude and depression can coexist in the same heart. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed coming in and going out, blessed in my brightest days and my darkest nights under the BARAK covenant. My brain chemistry doesn't measure my thankfulness. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, grateful AND struggling.
The Father doesn't measure your love by your mood. He sees your depressed heart still whispering 'thank You' and counts it as the most authentic worship He's ever heard.
