"If I had prayed more, served more, I'd be more ready to die"
How it sounds in your head: I see death approaching and I'm terrified I didn't do enough to secure my standing with God. Maybe if I'd attended more services, prayed longer, given more, I'd feel peaceful now instead of afraid.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
-- Ephesians 2:8-9Religious teaching that readiness for eternity depends on accumulated spiritual effort rather than finished work of Christ.
Her fear feels like evidence of insufficient faith, and decades of performance-based church teaching suggest more works equal more assurance. The dying process feels like the final exam she's not prepared for.
He had zero time left to pray more, serve more, or prove anything. No baptism, no communion, no church attendance, no ministry - just one moment of faith. Jesus declared him saved and Paradise-bound INSTANTLY.
I REFUSE the lie that my readiness for eternity depends on my prayer life or service record! IT IS WRITTEN that salvation is by grace through faith, NOT by works, so no one can boast. My confidence is not in what I've done but in what CHRIST has done - and He said 'It is FINISHED.' IT IS WRITTEN that I am perfected FOREVER by His one offering. The BARAK blessing rests on me by covenant, not by performance. I am as ready NOW as I will ever be because HIS blood has made me ready!
The Father isn't checking your prayer log - He's longing to welcome you into arms that have been open since Calvary. Like the prodigal's father, He's been watching, waiting, ready to celebrate your homecoming regardless of your preparation.
