"I need to honor my parents by never confronting their abuse or setting boundaries."
How it sounds in your head: Every time you consider saying no to their demands or naming what they did, you hear 'Honor your father and mother' weaponized against you. You're 55 and still walking on eggshells, terrified that protecting yourself equals dishonoring them and forfeiting God's blessing.
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."
-- Galatians 5:1Religion twists 'honor' into 'enable,' making boundary-setting a sin and self-protection rebellion against God's command.
It's one of the Ten Commandments and pastors quote it constantly, equating honor with unconditional access, submission, silence about harm. Protecting yourself feels like breaking God's law.
Saul was king, David's authority, literally trying to murder him with a spear. David didn't stay and submit to abuse under 'honor authority'—he RAN, set boundaries, protected himself, and God blessed him anyway, eventually making him king because honoring Saul's position didn't require accepting Saul's violence.
I REFUSE the lie that honoring my parents requires accepting their abuse. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ has made me FREE—I stand in that liberty and reject every yoke of bondage. Boundaries are NOT dishonor. Protecting myself is NOT rebellion. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed, chosen, loved by God—and that blessing does NOT depend on enabling dysfunction. I can honor their position without granting them access to harm me. I am FREE to say no, FREE to protect my peace, FREE to confront harm. God is NOT angry at my boundaries—He GAVE me freedom and I receive it NOW.
The Father isn't demanding you sacrifice yourself on the altar of 'honor your parents'—He's offering you FREEDOM, boundaries, protection, celebrating when you step out of bondage into the liberty He purchased with His blood. Right now He's affirming your 'no,' strengthening your resolve, blessing your boundaries, calling you BRAVE for protecting what He calls precious: you.
