"I need to earn my parents' approval to feel valuable and secure."
How it sounds in your head: Every achievement feels empty without their validation. I keep trying harder—better grades, perfect behavior, reading their moods—hoping to finally hear 'I'm proud of you.' Their approval feels like oxygen; without it, I'm suffocating.
"For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ."
-- Galatians 1:10Enemy makes parental approval the measure of worth, creating performance addiction for love that should be free.
Their praise is rare and conditional, coming only when she performs. The craving for their 'well done' drives every decision.
Leah kept having sons hoping to FINALLY win her husband Jacob's love—'Now my husband will love me,' she said after each birth. After the fourth son, she stopped seeking Jacob's approval and praised God instead, naming him Judah ('praise')—and THAT son carried the Messianic line.
I REFUSE the lie that I need my parents' approval to be valuable. IT IS WRITTEN that I seek to please GOD, not men—I cannot serve both masters. My worth is not determined by their praise, their pride, or their acknowledgment. IT IS WRITTEN in Ephesians 1:6 that I am 'accepted in the Beloved'—God's approval is ALREADY mine, irrevocable, complete. I am BELOVED, CHOSEN, DELIGHTED IN by the Father who sings over me with JOY (Zephaniah 3:17). Their opinion cannot add to or subtract from what Christ already secured. I am FREE from the performance treadmill.
The Father is standing with the robe, ring, and sandals BEFORE you achieve a single thing—He's not waiting for your report card, your perfect behavior, or your flawless obedience. He's running toward you with celebration gear RIGHT NOW, just because you're His.
