"I can't lead others when I still struggle with the same sins"
How it sounds in your head: I lead the small group on Wednesday nights, then binge drink alone on Friday. I post Scripture on Sunday, then fall into old patterns by Tuesday. How can I disciple someone else when I can't even disciple myself? Real leaders have overcome what I'm still battling.
"You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?"
-- Romans 2:21Source: Religious perfectionism demanding leaders be sinless before serving, contrary to every biblical leader's story
Every leadership book emphasizes integrity and 'practicing what you preach,' and your private struggles feel like hypocrisy. The gap between who you are on stage and who you are alone feels too wide to bridge, and shame whispers you need to step down until you've 'arrived.'
Moses MURDERED an Egyptian, fled the country as a fugitive, spent 40 years hiding in the desert as a shepherd. God appeared in the burning bush and called him to lead Israel OUT of Egypt while Moses was still a wanted man there—his unresolved past didn't disqualify him from his greatest assignment.
I REFUSE the lie that I can't lead others while I'm still battling. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul called himself the CHIEF of sinners in present tense while leading the church—my ongoing struggles don't disqualify me, they make me a PATTERN of God's longsuffering mercy. The enemy wants me to step down in shame, but God has called me to lead FROM the battle, not after it's over. IT IS WRITTEN in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that God comforts us in our tribulation so we can comfort those in trouble with the SAME comfort—I can't give away what I haven't received in the trenches. I am blessed with the BARAK of Abraham, a covenant blessing that covered LIARS and DECEIVERS and MURDERERS while they led. My leadership isn't based on my perfection; it's based on HIS grace working THROUGH my weakness.
The Father didn't call you to lead from a place of arrival—He called you to lead from the JOURNEY, so the people following you see a REAL person dependent on a REAL God, not a polished performance. Your struggles aren't disqualifying you; they're credentialing you for the broken people who need a leader who bleeds.
