"Godly men should be able to handle pain without medication or painkillers."
How it sounds in your head: My dad worked through pain. Real men don't complain or medicate every ache. If I take something for this back pain or these headaches, I'm being soft. Soldiers push through; leaders endure. I should too.
"Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those who are bitter of heart."
-- Proverbs 31:6Cultural masculinity conflates suffering in silence with strength; religious asceticism glorifies pain as spiritual.
You watched your father work injured and never complain. You've been the strong one your whole life. Admitting you hurt and taking something for it feels like weakness, and at this stage, you can't afford to be weak.
They offered Jesus wine mixed with myrrh (a painkiller) at the cross. The fact they offered it shows pain relief was available and acceptable. Jesus refused for redemptive reasons specific to His sacrifice, not to teach us to reject pain management.
I REFUSE the lie that godly men suffer without pain relief. IT IS WRITTEN to give strong drink to those in pain. Jesus was offered a painkiller, proving it was acceptable. My strength isn't proven by untreated pain; my strength is IN CHRIST. IT IS WRITTEN that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me—including stewarding my body with wisdom. The BARAK blessing covers my physical body. I am under grace, not under the law of proving toughness. I receive relief without guilt because my Father doesn't glorify needless suffering.
The Father sees you gritting through pain and says, 'Son, I gave you medicine for a reason. Let me help you.' He's not impressed by your suffering—He already saw His Son suffer enough for both of you.
