"Relying on pain medication means I'm not bearing my cross like Jesus commanded."
How it sounds in your head: Paul had his thorn, and he didn't get relief. Maybe chronic pain is my cross to bear, and seeking relief is spiritual weakness, refusing God's refining fire.
"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree')."
-- Galatians 3:13Religion: weaponizes suffering as sanctification, confusing Christ's redemptive cross with our medical management.
Church culture glorifies suffering as spiritual maturity, and your heating pad and Tylenol feel like you're opting out of the 'deeper walk.' Every time pain subsides with medication, you wonder if you're avoiding God's lesson.
Paul told Timothy to use wine for his stomach and frequent ailments - he didn't say 'bear your suffering for holiness.' Even the apostle who wrote about thorns told his spiritual son to address physical discomfort practically.
I REFUSE the lie that pain earns God's approval. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ redeemed me from the CURSE, which includes sickness (Galatians 3:13, Deuteronomy 28:61). My cross is following Jesus, not enduring diseases He already carried. Paul told Timothy to use medicine for his ailments - relief isn't rebellion. IT IS WRITTEN that by His stripes I WAS healed (1 Peter 2:24) - past tense, finished. The BARAK blessing includes health whether instant or progressive, because Jesus paid for FULL redemption.
Your Father isn't nodding approvingly while you suffer untreated pain - that's religion's god, not the Father who RAN to the prodigal. Jesus already bore sickness on the cross so you wouldn't have to bear it as maturity. He's running toward you with both supernatural healing AND natural pain relief, celebrating your wisdom in stewardship.
