"God only answers the prayers of people who have their spiritual life together"
How it sounds in your head: I'm still struggling with porn, inconsistent in Bible reading, miss church sometimes. Why would God answer my prayers when I'm not even faithful in the basics? He probably helps the guys who actually walk the walk.
"Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
-- Hebrews 4:16Performance-based access to God that makes answered prayer a reward for spiritual discipline rather than a gift of grace.
The contrast between your hidden struggles and public prayer requests creates shame that feels disqualifying. Answered prayers for 'better' Christians seem to confirm that access correlates with holiness.
A tax collector (traitor and thief in Jewish eyes) couldn't even lift his eyes to heaven, just beat his chest begging for mercy while a Pharisee recited his spiritual accomplishments. Jesus said the tax collector—who offered NOTHING but need—went home JUSTIFIED. Prayer answered.
I REFUSE the lie that answered prayer is a merit badge for spiritual performance. IT IS WRITTEN: come BOLDLY to the throne of GRACE to obtain MERCY (Hebrews 4:16)—I come FOR help, not because I've earned it. The tax collector had nothing to offer but 'God, be merciful' and went home JUSTIFIED (Luke 18:13-14). IT IS WRITTEN that while I was STILL a sinner, Christ died for me (Romans 5:8). I don't access God through my discipline—I ACCESS God through CHRIST'S BLOOD. I AM the righteousness of God IN HIM (2 Corinthians 5:21), not through my consistency. The BARAK protected Abraham THE LIAR—blessing isn't based on behavior.
Your Father doesn't answer prayers based on your spiritual report card—He answers because you're His CHILD. The prodigal came home smelling like pigs, spiritually bankrupt, and the father ran to him anyway.
