"God gave me this disability as punishment or to teach me something."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe you did something wrong, or your parents did. Maybe God is trying to keep you humble or teach you patience. Other people get normal lives—yours comes with this constant lesson attached. You're being disciplined through suffering.
"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."
-- John 10:10Old Covenant theology that attributes sickness and suffering to God's active punishment or pedagogical methods.
Religious people often say 'everything happens for a reason' or 'God is teaching you,' making God seem like the author of the disability.
Satan afflicted Job with painful sores—Job's religious friends insisted it was God's punishment. They were WRONG. God rebuked them and RESTORED Job—doubled everything he lost. The suffering came from the enemy, not from God.
I REFUSE the lie that God gave me disability to punish or teach me. IT IS WRITTEN that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came to give ABUNDANT LIFE. God is not the author of my suffering—Jesus took the curse so I could have the blessing. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ redeemed me from the curse of the law, which included sickness. Every good and perfect gift comes from the Father—disability is not His gift. I am blessed with LIFE, with HEALTH, with supernatural wholeness. I walk in the blessing of Abraham by covenant, not by my condition.
The Father is not punishing you—He PUNISHED Jesus in your place. He's not using disability to teach you; He gave you the Holy Spirit as your Teacher. His heart toward you is only love, only mercy, only grace.
