"God can't use me because of my addiction history. I'm disqualified."
How it sounds in your head: Men my age are supposed to be elders, mentors, examples. But I wasted my life addicted. Who would listen to me? God uses the faithful, not the failures. I'm disqualified from any real purpose.
"But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty."
-- 1 Corinthians 1:27Source: religious performance standards that disqualify the broken instead of celebrating God's power in weakness.
He sees other men his age who led well, stayed clean, served faithfully. He feels like damaged goods, unfit for use. The church's elder requirements seem to exclude him. Shame says God only uses the 'qualified.'
John Mark DESERTED Paul and Barnabaus on the missionary journey—such a failure that Paul REFUSED to take him again. Years later, Paul wrote from prison: 'Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is USEFUL TO ME for ministry' (2 Tim 4:11). From deserter to USEFUL. Instant restoration of purpose.
I REFUSE the lie that my past disqualifies me. IT IS WRITTEN that God CHOOSES the weak to shame the mighty. My addiction history is not my disqualification—it's my TESTIMONY of His power. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:28 that God works ALL THINGS together for good. Every battle I fought, every failure I survived, every scar I carry—God is using it ALL for His glory. I am not damaged goods—I am a TROPHY OF GRACE. The BARAK blessing makes me the HEAD, not the tail, regardless of my resume.
The Father doesn't require a clean record to use you—He requires a surrendered heart. The prodigal came home with NOTHING to offer, and the Father gave him the ROBE OF AUTHORITY immediately. Your mess is your MESSAGE, and God wastes nothing.
