"God allowed this divorce as punishment for something I did wrong in the past."
How it sounds in your head: I keep thinking back to my wild college years, that abortion I had, the guys before I was saved. Maybe this is karma. God let my marriage fall apart because I didn't deserve happiness after what I did back then.
"Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea."
-- Micah 7:18-19Works-based theology that teaches God punishes you through life circumstances, making Him the author of your pain.
The timing of the divorce feels too 'perfect' not to be punishment. Your shame over past sins makes divine retribution feel deserved and even just.
Manasseh sacrificed his own SONS to demons, filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, did more evil than any king before him. When he repented, God not only forgave him but RESTORED him to the throne and gave him additional years of peaceful, blessed rule. No 'paying for it later.'
I REFUSE the lie that my divorce is God punishing me for past sins. IT IS WRITTEN in Micah 7:18-19 that God casts ALL my sins into the depths of the sea - He doesn't retain anger because He DELIGHTS in mercy. Manasseh sacrificed his CHILDREN to demons and God fully restored him when he repented. IT IS WRITTEN in Isaiah 43:25 that God blots out my transgressions and REMEMBERS my sins no more. Jesus took ALL punishment at the cross. My past is not chasing me. The BARAK blessing covered murderers and liars. I am NOT under punishment; I am under GRACE, under blessing, under the smile of my Father who has amnesia about what's in the sea.
Your Father isn't keeping a cosmic tally of your past sins, waiting for the perfect moment to 'get you back.' The divorce broke YOUR heart, not His plan for punishment. He's not the author of your pain - He's the HEALER of it, already working to bring beauty from these ashes while you're still in them.
