"Fasting and restriction prove my spiritual devotion and self-control."
How it sounds in your head: You've fasted for spiritual reasons, and somewhere along the way, the line blurred. Now skipping meals feels holy, restriction feels like sacrifice, and eating feels almost sinful—less devoted, more carnal. You praise God for the 'willpower' to say no to food, and deep down you wonder if your fasting is worship or just your eating disorder wearing a Christian t-shirt.
"Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving."
-- 1 Timothy 4:3-4Source: Religious emphasis on fasting as spiritual discipline twisted into equating food denial with godliness, making hunger a badge of honor rather than a tool for seeking God.
Because the Bible does talk about fasting, and you've heard testimonies of breakthroughs that came through it. Because restriction gives you a sense of control and virtue, and calling it 'fasting' makes it feel sanctified rather than disordered. Because denying the body feels more spiritual than honoring it.
Pharisees criticized Jesus' disciples for not fasting while John's disciples did, trying to shame them for eating. Jesus' response: 'Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?' He defended FEASTING in His presence. Restriction wasn't the mark of devotion; RELATIONSHIP was.
I REFUSE the lie that food restriction proves my spiritual devotion. IT IS WRITTEN that God created food to be received with THANKSGIVING, and every creature of God is good—nothing is to be refused if received with gratitude. Biblical fasting is a tool for seeking God, not a performance of holiness or a cover for disordered eating. Jesus defended His disciples for EATING, called Himself the BREAD of life, and made meals central to His ministry. IT IS WRITTEN in Colossians 2:16 that I should let no one judge me in food or drink. My righteousness is CHRIST, not my empty stomach. I am FREE to feast and to fast as the Spirit leads, not as guilt or control demand.
The Father isn't more pleased with you when you skip meals. He's inviting you to the FEAST—bread and wine, manna and quail, fish and loaves multiplied, the wedding banquet with the BEST wine. He's the God who FEEDS His people, not the God who starves them to prove their worth.
