"Eating for pleasure instead of fuel is sinful and indulgent."
How it sounds in your head: You've been taught that food is utilitarian—fuel for the body, nothing more. Enjoying it too much feels gluttonous, carnal, unspiritual. You watch others savor dessert or delight in a meal and feel a twinge of judgment mixed with longing. You've internalized the message that denying pleasure is holiness, that enjoying food is somehow less godly than just eating for function.
"Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God."
-- Ecclesiastes 2:24Source: Religious asceticism that treats physical pleasure as worldly, merged with diet culture that demonizes enjoyment and elevates 'clean eating' as virtue.
Because you've heard sermons about gluttony, read books about self-control, been in circles where fasting is praised and feasting is suspect. Because denying yourself feels sacrificial and holy, and pleasure feels dangerous, like a slippery slope to sin.
The guests at the wedding had already drunk all the wine—they were well-supplied, celebratory, enjoying themselves—and Jesus didn't rebuke the excess. He made MORE wine, the BEST wine, 180 gallons of it, for people who were already celebrating. Abundance and enjoyment were His gift.
I REFUSE the lie that eating for pleasure is sinful. IT IS WRITTEN that nothing is better than to eat and drink and enjoy—this is FROM THE HAND OF GOD. Jesus made the finest wine for a celebration, ate with sinners, was accused of being a glutton and drunkard by religious people who couldn't stand His freedom. Food is not just fuel; it's a GIFT to be enjoyed with gratitude. IT IS WRITTEN in 1 Timothy 4:4 that every creature of God is good and nothing is to be refused if it's received with thanksgiving. I receive food with JOY, as a gift from a Father who invented flavor and calls it GOOD. Pleasure at the table is worship, not indulgence.
The Father isn't frowning when you enjoy the food He made. He's the One who invented chocolate, who designed your tongue to experience sweet and savory, who said 'taste and see that the Lord is GOOD.' He delights in your delight—it's why He made taste in the first place.
