"Depression is just unconfessed sin or lack of faith in my life."
How it sounds in your head: The elders say if I had clean hands and a pure heart, I'd have peace. I must have hidden sin causing this darkness. Maybe I'm not praying enough, or there's some secret rebellion God is punishing me for. Real men of God don't struggle like this.
"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance."
-- Psalm 42:5Religious teaching equates mental illness with moral failure, making depression evidence of hidden sin rather than a medical condition.
Religious leaders quote verses about joy and peace, implying your lack of them reveals spiritual problems. The Psalms talk about confession bringing relief, making your continued depression feel like proof of unconfessed sin somewhere.
Elijah just called down fire from heaven and defeated 450 false prophets—his greatest ministry victory. Immediately after, he wanted to DIE and asked God to take his life, showing depression can hit even after spiritual highs.
I REFUSE the lie that my depression is evidence of sin or weak faith. IT IS WRITTEN that David, approved by God, battled a cast-down soul. Elijah wanted to die after his greatest victory. My mental health does NOT determine my righteousness. I am the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD in Christ, given freely, not earned by emotional stability. IT IS WRITTEN there is NO condemnation—not even for the darkness I feel. The BARAK blessing over me is not based on my mental state but on COVENANT through Christ's blood. I am BLESSED coming in and going out, even in this valley.
The Father sent an angel to feed Elijah in his depression, not to rebuke him. He's sending help to you—not condemnation. He sees you in the darkness and is providing rest, food, and comfort, just like He did for His prophet.
