"Depression at my age means I wasted my life and failed spiritually"
How it sounds in your head: I served God all these years and I'm ending with depression? What was it all for? Real faith would have protected me from this. I must have done something wrong.
"Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails."
-- Psalm 71:9Source: Religion + world - the false teaching that spiritual maturity equals emotional immunity, combined with cultural shame around elderly mental health.
You can point to decades of service, yet here you are struggling. The church celebrates testimonies of deliverance but whispers about those still battling, making you feel like a spiritual failure after a lifetime of faith.
After the greatest victory of his ministry, Elijah fell into suicidal depression, asking God to take his life. God didn't rebuke him for lack of faith - He sent an angel with food, let him sleep, touched him gently, and fed him again.
I REFUSE the lie that depression at 70-something means I wasted my life or failed God. IT IS WRITTEN that even the psalmist cried out about weakness in old age, and God preserved his words as SCRIPTURE. My struggle doesn't invalidate my journey - it invites His nearness. IT IS WRITTEN in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that His strength is made PERFECT in weakness. I am Abraham's seed, an heir according to promise, and the BARAK blessing covers my mind, my emotions, my twilight years. The Father isn't disappointed - He's running toward me with tender care, just as He fed Elijah in his darkest depression.
The Father sees your decades of faithfulness AND your current struggle, and He's not keeping score - He's keeping you. He's preparing the robe of His comfort, the ring of His authority over this depression, and the feast of His joy, because you're His beloved daughter coming home to rest.
