"Depression and anxiety are just spiritual attacks I need to rebuke away."
How it sounds in your head: You've been told to 'take authority' over depression, to 'rebuke the spirit of anxiety.' You've prayed, fasted, commanded—but the darkness persists. Now you feel like you're failing at spiritual warfare on top of everything else.
"Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses."
-- 1 Timothy 5:23Source: Religion—oversimplification of mental health as purely demonic, ignoring biology, chemistry, trauma, and medical reality.
You've seen deliverance ministries cast out 'spirits of depression' and charismatic teaching that frames everything as spiritual warfare. When rebuking doesn't work, it feels like you lack authority or are under a curse.
Job, a righteous man God Himself praised, suffered intense mental anguish—months of futility, sleepless nights filled with tossing till dawn, thoughts of despair. God never rebuked him for it; He allowed Job to voice it fully and then revealed Himself in compassion.
I REFUSE the lie that mental health is only spiritual warfare. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul prescribed physical remedies for physical issues—brain chemistry is PHYSICAL. I take authority over demonic oppression, YES—but I also receive medical care, therapy, rest, and community. IT IS WRITTEN in 1 Timothy 5:23 that medicine is legitimate provision. I am blessed under the BARAK covenant with access to EVERY resource—spiritual AND physical. I reject false guilt for needing help beyond prayer. I walk in both spiritual authority AND practical wisdom.
The Father isn't waiting for you to rebuke harder—He's already provided doctors, counselors, medication, and community. He's whispering: 'Son, I fight for you. And I've given you tools. Use them without shame.'
