"A strong Christian man shouldn't need therapy or medication for depression."
How it sounds in your head: You've led others for decades. You've preached faith. Now you're falling apart and need pills like some weak person? What would people think if they knew their leader couldn't even handle his own mind? You're supposed to be the rock.
"And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
-- 2 Corinthians 12:9Religion teaches that spiritual maturity eliminates mental struggle, making brain chemistry a character failure.
You've built an identity as the strong one everyone depends on—admitting you need help feels like dismantling everything you've been. The visible decline in energy and joy makes you wonder if you've failed spiritually when you've actually succeeded physically in staying alive long enough to need help.
After his greatest victory over 450 prophets of Baal, Elijah crashed so hard he wanted to die, hiding under a tree in suicidal depression. God's response wasn't rebuke—He sent an angel with food twice, let him sleep, and gave him 40 days of journey fuel from two meals, then spoke gently.
I REFUSE the lie that needing help for my mind disqualifies me from being a man of God. IT IS WRITTEN that God's strength is made perfect in my weakness, not my pretense of having it all together. My brain is an organ like my heart or liver—needing support for it is wisdom, not weakness. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and that standing isn't shaken by serotonin levels or counseling appointments. I am Abraham's seed and heir according to the promise—the BARAK blessing covers my mind, my emotions, my whole being. The Father ran to the prodigal in his worst state; He's running to me now with provision, not condemnation.
The Father isn't waiting for you to 'man up' and handle this alone—He's already running toward you with the ring of authority, robe of identity, and provision of help. Just like He fed Elijah in the depression cave and didn't lecture him, He's providing doctors, medication, therapists as gifts of His love for your whole person.
