"This pain is punishment for something I did wrong, I deserve to suffer."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe this is karma. I've done things I'm ashamed of - watched stuff I shouldn't, lied to my parents, hurt people. Maybe God is teaching me a lesson through this pain. I probably deserve this.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
-- 1 John 1:9Religious lie that pain is divine punishment, making God a vindictive scorekeeper instead of loving Father.
Guilt over real sins creates a mental connection that pain must be punishment. Religious teaching about reaping what you sow reinforces this false equation.
Literal criminal being executed for his crimes, admitted he deserved death. Jesus didn't lecture him or make him suffer to learn a lesson - He said 'TODAY you will be with Me in Paradise' - instant forgiveness, instant promise, no punishment required.
I REFUSE the lie that pain is punishment for my sin. IT IS WRITTEN: 'He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness' - when I confess, I'm cleansed, PERIOD. The thief on the cross went from execution to paradise in ONE DAY with no punishment. IT IS WRITTEN: 'There is therefore NOW no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus' - NO condemnation means NO punishment. Jesus took it all. I am forgiven, cleansed, and healed. Pain, you have NO legal right - LEAVE.
The Father isn't keeping score of your failures and inflicting pain to teach you lessons. He ran to you while you still smelled like the pig pen, threw a party, and calls you beloved - pain isn't on His menu for you.
