"The church only wants my estate money, not actually me"
How it sounds in your head: Suddenly the pastor is visiting regularly now that I'm updating my will. They ask about my 'legacy' and 'investment in Kingdom work.' Nobody came when I was lonely, but now that there's inheritance to discuss, here they are. I'm just a dollar sign to them.
"Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock."
-- 1 Peter 5:2-3Source: Institutional corruption making financial predators of shepherds, creating legitimate suspicion that clouds ability to receive genuine care or leave godly legacy
The timing is undeniable—visits increased when estate planning became relevant. She's heard stories of churches manipulating elderly members. The attention feels transactional rather than relational.
A poor widow gave two small copper coins—essentially nothing—in a temple system full of corruption and religious showmanship. Jesus didn't critique the system's worthiness; He celebrated her HEART and declared she gave more than all the rich. God saw HER, not just her gift.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm valued only for my estate. IT IS WRITTEN: shepherds are commanded to serve NOT for dishonest gain. If their motives are wrong, that's between them and God—my worth isn't determined by their integrity or lack thereof. I am PRECIOUS in God's sight apart from any financial contribution. IT IS WRITTEN: the widow's mite was celebrated for her HEART, not the amount. I will steward my estate as the Holy Spirit leads, not from manipulation, fear, or spite. I receive the BARAK blessing—I am blessed in my giving and my withholding, and my value to Heaven is INFINITE regardless of what I leave behind.
The Father is saying: 'Beloved, I don't need your money—I own the cattle on a thousand hills. But if you want to invest in Kingdom work because you LOVE Me, I'll multiply it beyond imagination. And if you don't leave them a cent, you're still My precious daughter.' He's running toward you with the robe that says 'DAUGHTER,' not 'DONOR.'
