"Retirement is selfish when so many are suffering; I should give everything away."
How it sounds in your head: How can I save for my own comfortable future when people are hungry now? Isn't planning for retirement just hoarding when I could be giving it all to missions? Maybe I'm supposed to trust God completely and give everything away, living on nothing.
"But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."
-- 1 Timothy 5:8Religion: False humility that equates provision for yourself with selfishness, making stewardship and self-care compete with generosity.
She genuinely loves people and feels guilty having resources for future comfort when others lack present necessities. Religious teaching has made 'dying to self' mean impoverishing herself, and saving feels like the opposite of radical faith.
During seven years of plenty, Joseph stored grain—massive amounts, 'beyond measure'—while people could have said 'give it away now to those who need it.' That STORED provision saved nations during famine. His preparation enabled GREATER generosity later.
I REFUSE the lie that providing for my future is selfish. IT IS WRITTEN that those who don't provide for their own have denied the faith—saving for retirement IS stewardship, not greed. The BARAK blessing includes treasure and oil in my dwelling, provision stored for future use. IT IS WRITTEN that the wise store up, and Joseph's stored grain saved nations—my provision later enables GREATER generosity, not less. I am called to be the LENDER, not the borrower, which requires resources. My retirement provision isn't competing with Kingdom work—it's FUNDING long-term Kingdom impact. I receive abundance NOW and LATER.
Your Father is watching you try to impoverish yourself in His name and RUNNING toward you to stop the insanity. He's whispering, 'I didn't save you to starve you later—I want you WEALTHY in old age so you can fund My work from ABUNDANCE, not become a burden on it.'
