"Real Christians trust God alone without needing antidepressants or anxiety medication."
How it sounds in your head: I'm 84 years old and need pills just to stop crying or calm my racing heart. Where is my faith? After decades of walking with God, shouldn't I be stronger than this? These pills feel like admitting Jesus isn't enough.
"A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones."
-- Proverbs 17:22Religious condemnation that labels mental health medication as spiritual weakness, ignoring that the brain is a physical organ.
Depression and anxiety weren't discussed openly in her generation—you just 'prayed harder' and 'had more faith.' Needing medication for emotions feels like a moral failure when you've been taught the joy of the Lord is your strength.
After defeating 450 prophets of Baal, Elijah crashed into suicidal depression, asking God to let him die. God didn't rebuke his faith—He gave him FOOD, WATER, and SLEEP (physical care for physical/emotional depletion), then spoke gently to him.
I REFUSE the lie that my antidepressants dishonor God. My brain is a physical organ that sometimes needs medical support, just as my heart or kidneys might. IT IS WRITTEN that a merry heart does good LIKE MEDICINE—Scripture itself validates medical intervention for wellbeing. God gave Elijah food and rest when he was suicidal, not a sermon about faith. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and NO condemnation exists for me. The BARAK blessing covers my mental health, my medications, and my healing journey. I receive the Father's tender care through every means He provides.
Your Father doesn't see your pill bottles and shake His head in disappointment. He sees the trauma you've carried, the chemical imbalances in your beautiful brain, the decades of unprocessed grief, and He runs toward you with the medication as a GIFT in His hand, saying 'Let me help carry this burden, beloved.'
